Sparkle, Italy Telecom's international service, announced a long-term investment in BlueMed submarine cable system, a cable system connecting Palermo and Genoa.

According to reports, the system will cross the Tyrrhenian Sea and connect to the open data centre of Spakle Sicily Hub in Palermo, which serves 18 international cables. Genoa's new open landing station is directly linked to Milan's rich digital ecosystem.

In addition, BlueMed will set up multiple branch paths in the Tyrannian Sea and will support further expansion of Sicily's southbound travel.

BlueMed, with a capacity of 240 Tbps and a length of about 1,000 kilometers, will provide advanced connections between hubs in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the European continent, with delays reduced by up to 50% compared with existing land cables connecting Sicily and Milan.

In addition, Sparkle's new open landing station in Genoa will be the preferred channel for other upcoming submarine cables, strengthening Italy's role as a digital portal between Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe by diversifying European access channels.

According to the plan, BlueMed submarine optical cable system will be put into operation in 2020.
